Harley Battery Not Charging? Work Through It in Order

October 14, 2026 · 1 min read

Start with the cheapest checks before you buy parts.

  1. Battery: a healthy, fully charged 12 V battery reads about 12.6 V at rest.
  2. Connections: clean and tighten the terminals and the main ground.
  3. Charging voltage: with the engine running above idle you should see roughly 13.8 to 14.6 V across the battery.
  4. Regulator connector: look for burning or corrosion.
  5. Stator: test as described in our stator guide.

Harley won’t start, just clicking

A single click or rapid clicking usually means low battery voltage or a poor connection. If the battery is good, check the starter relay, solenoid and cables.
