What Is a Harley Softail? Touring vs Softail

October 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The Softail frame hides its rear suspension so the bike looks like a rigid hardtail. Older Softails put twin shocks under the transmission; from 2018 the new Softail chassis uses a single shock under the seat and absorbed the former Dyna models.

Difference between Touring and Softail

Touring bikes such as the Street Glide and Road King use a larger frame with twin rear shocks, hard bags and more luggage capacity. Softails are lower and lighter. Suspension, seats and luggage parts are different between the two, so order by family.

Harley rear shock adjustment

Many Touring shocks have preload adjustment. Add preload for a passenger or luggage and back it off when riding solo.
