Milwaukee-Eight vs Twin Cam (and Twin Cam vs Evolution)

October 10, 2026 · 1 min read

Milwaukee-Eight

Introduced on Touring models for 2017 and Softails for 2018. Four valves per cylinder, a single cam, a counterbalancer and sizes of 107, 114 and 117 cubic inches.

Twin Cam

Fitted to Big Twins from 1999 until it was replaced by the Milwaukee-Eight. Two chain-driven cams, two valves per cylinder, sizes from 88 to 110 cubic inches.

Twin Cam vs Evolution

The Evolution engine powered Big Twins from 1984 to 1999 with a single gear-driven cam. An Evolution-based engine powered the Sportster for decades.

Many parts do not swap between generations, so always order by engine.
